Meeting, Tuesday, November 19, 2019

GREETINGS

If you are a new member, welcome! If you are still working as a school employee, we know that it is unlikely that you can attend, but we want to keep you aware of what we do. If you are a cash member who pays dues once a year and decide to change to dues deduction, please let us know. Your reward will be $10 off your first luncheon at Joshua’s Restaurant after you sign up. Any new person who joins us will receive $10 toward their lunch.

CCSRA LUNCH – Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at NOON

Joshua’s Restaurant
113 N. DelGuzzi Drive
Port Angeles

We have an opportunity to find our more about the perks of being a Washington School Retirees” Association (WSSRA and CCSRA) member. Jeff Burgess from Association Member Benefits Advisors (AMBA) will give a short presentation about membership benefits and will stay after the meeting to answer any extra questions.

Our main guest speaker will be Mike Soiseth from CCH Individualized Support Services, an organization that serves adults with life-long disabilities in Clallam and Jefferson Counties.

Let us know that you will be coming to the meeting by 3:00 pm Sunday, November 17, 2019, if possible, by calling Darlene Jones (360-457-5352) or Jill Oakes (360-417-3012) or Marcia Homer (360-683-4317 – leave a message).  It’s okay to come even if you miss the deadline. We just like to have a general idea so the restaurant knows how many places to set. Sometimes the restaurant workers have to scramble to set up more tables, but they are happy to have us.

MENU:

Each attendee is able to order any item from the menu. A free dessert is usually included after lunch.

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner items are offered. There is also a daily special.

STATE NEWS:  PROPERTY TAX RELIEF?

November 12, 2019

Dear WSSRA Member:

The Washington State Legislature has expanded eligibility for senior property tax reductions. You should be aware that you may qualify for a property tax deferral or exemption.

The previous annual household income cap to be eligible for the benefit was $40,000. However, the cap is now based on a percentage of median county household income. For instance, the eligibility cap for an exemption in King County is now $58,400.

Program information is available here:

http://rpecwa.org/wp-content/uploads/PropertyTaxExemption-Seniors.pdf?link_id=2&can_id=19f8ece3cc76d17510bdd8e8b750bdc9&source=email-property-tax-exemption-program-for-senior-citizens&email_referrer=email_655487&email_subject=property-tax-exemption-program-for-senior-citizens

The exemption and deferral program is being managed by county assessors. Contact information is available here:

https://dor.wa.gov/find-taxes-rates/property-tax/county-assessor-and-treasurer-websites?link_id=4&can_id=19f8ece3cc76d17510bdd8e8b750bdc9&source=email-property-tax-exemption-program-for-senior-citizens&email_referrer=email_655487&email_subject=property-tax-exemption-program-for-senior-citizens

This is a program seniors must apply for. The stated application deadline for the 2020 calendar year is December 31, 2019; however, assessors have the legal leeway to accept applications beyond the deadline.

Questions about the program and your eligibility can be best answered by your county assessor’s office. If you think you might qualify, please give them a call.

Sincerely,

Alan Burke, Executive Director

Washington State School Retirees’ Association

Plan 1 COLA  (Unfortunately, this is the same time as our meeting, but if you’re in that area…)

Dear WSSRA Leader:

The Washington State Select Committee on Pension Policy will be meeting on Tuesday, November 19th to discuss re-endorsement of Plan 1 COLA Legislation. If you are available and in the south Puget Sound region, it would be helpful to have concerned citizens in the audience. An empty room always signifies a lack of interest.

The SCPP will meet on November 19th at 10:00 am in House Hearing Room A. Parking on the capitol campus is $2.00 per hour. Free parking and a free shuttle is available at the Olympia Farmers Market. https://www.intercitytransit.com/bus/routes/dash-101

The committee will also be televised on TVW.

Sincerely,

Peter Diedrick, Legislative Director

Washington State School Retirees’ Association
